The third day of the Forum and Exhibition “Transport of Russia” started with the discussion of environmental issues in transportation sector

November 18 is the final day of the XV International Forum and Exhibition “Transport of Russia” which are the key parts of the “Transport Week” – the main sector-specific event in Russia.

The business program of the third day opened with the panel discussion “Green Agenda in the Transportation Sector”. The participants studied practices and perspectives of implementation of green financing mechanisms in the transportation sector, its transformation under conditions of a shift to low-carbon economy and the required measures for stimulation of development of eco-friendly transport.

The discussion was moderated by Marianna Maksimovskaya, President of “Mikhailov and Partners” Group of Companies. When answering to her question regarding the strategy of shifting to lower carbon emissions, Anatoly Khramtsov, Deputy Director General – Chief Engineer of Russian Railways OJSC, noted: “The approved environmental strategy for the Russian railways was up to the year 2020. In April this year we reviewed a strategy up to the year 2030 and it should be approved in the IV quarter... It is perfectly correlated to the national natural management concepts approved in the statutory documents of the Russian Federation, but at the same time this strategy takes into account all targets defined by the UN”.

During her performance Elena Haykin Sapozhnikova, partner of the Digital Horizon Investment Group, Non-Executive Director of Inter RAO PJSC, member of the Governing Council of the Global Climatic Initiative estimated the role of Russia in the international climatic agenda and highlighted that “this agenda has rapidly become emergent”.

Andrey Kiselev, First Deputy Director General of VTB Infrastructure Holding, declared that his holding is willingly supporting “green” initiatives and contributing into the supporting infrastructure. The current portfolio of the company includes 14 projects.

Alexander Kondrashov, Head of the Design Office for the Development of Public Transport in “VEB.RF” State Development Corporation, reviewed various ways of estimating the amount of investments into eco-friendly transport and the incentives required for its integration.

Today we are discussing how we should simulate algorithms of our actions with the aim to ensure compliance with the global standards which will define the economic component of activities of the key Russian companies and be reflected in the country’s economical balance” – said Igor Koval, Head of the Federal Railway Transport Agency when describing the objectives of his Department.

The measures on carbon footprint reduction being undertaken by Sovcomflot PJSC were reviewed by Igor Tonkovidov, Director General – Chairperson of the company.

Konstantiv Trofimenko, Director of the Center of Transportation Problems in Metropolitan Cities at The Institute of Transport Economics and Transport Policy Studies of the National Research University Higher School of Economics, the author of the only thesis on transport ecology in Russia, told about the reforms of transportation systems in cities required to improve the environmental situation. When talking about decarbonization, Andrey Chikhanchin, Deputy Director General for Commerce and Finances at Aeroflot PJSC, noted that by substituting the air fleet with a modern one his company has reduced the emissions by one third which is a very good indicator.
